Alternate Nostril Breathing

You can practice this technique in any upright seated position either on your mat or on a chair.  If you are on a chair make sure that you keep spine upright – do not use the back of the chair for support.

Ocean Breath

Ocean Breath is one of the most fundamental pranayama techniques for the yoga student to engage with and master.

Simply put, we learn to gently narrow the throat so that as we breathe in and out we can hear the sound of our own breath.  The sound resembles that made by the sea gently lapping a shingle beach.

The Sanskrit word ‘Pranayama’ refers to all those practices in yoga where we work in some way with the breath.  However, it is important to understand that, even when we are practicing the yoga postures we are also working with the breath.

Standing Forward Bend

The most important thing to learn when performing a forward bend such as Standing Forward Bend is to hinge at the hips keeping as flat a back as possible.  Practicing like this is the best way to avoid injuring the lower back.

Upward Facing Dog

Upward Facing Dog is a deep back bend that is commonly featured in many Sun Salute sequences.  It is important to practice this posture in such a way that over compression in the lower back is avoided.

My First Yoga Post

Hi! This is my first yoga blog post. Welcome to my site.

My ambition for this site is to share with others my interest in yoga – an ancient practice which, since I was studying at university in the seventies, I have found both fascinating and beneficial.
